About Africa Fab Lab

Africa Fab Lab exists to replace "import an expensive machine" with "build it yourself from local materials". We curate real, field-tested, low-cost methods for building homes, growing food, generating energy, purifying water and running a small household or micro-enterprise.

Why local beats imported

An imported block machine costs more than most households earn in a year, needs spare parts that never arrive, and stops the day a bearing fails. A hand-built compound-lever press costs the price of timber and a handful of bolts, can be repaired by whoever built it, and keeps the money in the local economy. That trade — a bit more labour for far less cost and far more independence — runs through every project on this site.

Our sourcing standard

We only publish methods that a real builder community has documented and used. Each of the 100 plans lists its tools, materials, a realistic cost range, ordered build steps, safety notes, and a link back to the original source. We write the build steps; the designs belong to the communities credited on the resources page.

How Verified Build works

• A builder submits the project they built, with photos of the finished item in use, their location, and what they changed.
• A reviewer checks the photos against the plan and the claimed cost, and asks for outcome detail — fuel saved, litres filtered, blocks passing a water test.
• Once confirmed, the plan carries the Verified Build badge with a note naming the builds behind it. Unverified plans stay published and clearly labelled as unverified.

Built for a phone

Most people reach this site on a phone, often on a slow or metered connection. Pages are kept light, text-first and readable in one column, so a plan is usable at the build site rather than only at a desk.
